On Sep. 24, 2025, PlayStation held a ‘State of Play’ event, which revealed new information about the variety of games affiliated with or coming to PlayStation consoles.
At this event, one such game shown off was the upcoming ‘Wolverine’ game. This was heavily requested by the fanbase as no new information had surfaced officially from developer ‘Insomniac’ since the game was first revealed in 2021.
The trailer begins almost immediately with gameplay, which hasn’t been previously revealed. It features an intense fight featuring the titular character. This gameplay was nearly shocking to see as Insomniac has not made a game as graphic as the one shown in the trailer.
When compared to the Spider-Man titles made by the same developer, which seldom include blood, it is clear Insomniac took fan recommendations for a more mature ‘Wolverine' game to heart.
The game also features a diverse cast of villains from Wolverine’s rogues’ catalog. In the latest trailer, we got a first look at Omega Red, a mutant from the Soviet Union who, in the X-Men comics, was created by the KGB into a super-soldier.
Omega Red has super strength and has the ability to release deadly spores that can kill humans within seconds.
This is a great and very classic choice of villain to include in this game that will bring a spotlight to a character that has been otherwise mostly glossed over in Wolverine adaptations. I also feel his design has translated well into the style that Insomniac was trying to achieve with these games.

Another prominent reveal in the trailer was Mystique. It is currently unclear whether or not she will be a villain or an ally to Wolverine in this game. She has the ability to shapeshift her appearance into people. She is a character with a lot of history with Wolverine and is a very welcome addition to the game.
We don’t see much of her design, but what was shown is a seamless addition to the game stylistically. Given this, however, the trailer left a lot to be desired in terms of her potential role in the story, which has had very little revealed as of yet.

We also see a type of villain that is reminiscent of the X-Men as a whole, the Sentinels. These designs also fit well within the world; however, I do feel like the design leaves a lot to be desired.
An important aspect of being a comic book game is featuring comic book-like character designs, and unlike their comic counterpart, which are typically bright purple, they are very monotone and blend into the world in this game.

The design for his suit is very reminiscent in terms of design to Insomniac’s Spider-Man; they both are rooted in very classic designs for these beloved characters, but still feel very fresh and modern.
The design is also in stark contrast to my complaint about the Sentinels; the suit is bright yellow and feels like a very nice blend of comic book and the photorealistic designs this game is attempting to capture.
This game is taking a different direction in terms of gameplay than the previous Spider-Man titles made by Insomniac. While that game was set in an open-world New York City, Wolverine is set in a variety of worldwide locations such as Mandipoor, Tokyo, and the Canadian wilderness (IGN).
This will make the gameplay more linear. Only time will tell if this will make for more or less interesting game mechanics than in Spider-Man, but from what was shown in the trailer, I think this game will have some great moments, beautiful set pieces, wonderful character designs, and fun action shots. I am greatly looking forward to this game and other future potential Insomniac projects.
