The Los Angeles Rams hosted the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football on Oct. 12 to close out Week 5 of NFL action. This was a game on a lot of calendars that fans and professionals were looking forward to, and it sure lived up to its hype.

The Bills and the Rams came into the 2026-27 season as two of the top favorites to hoist the Lombardi Trophy in February. Both teams have elite quarterbacks, shutdown defenses, and made great offseason acquisitions. Although the Rams started slower than expected, they are still a great all-around football team that can turn things around.

The Buffalo Bills came in with a 3-1 record prior to this game while the Los Angeles Rams came in with a 2-2 record. This was seen as a must-win game for the Rams, not wanting to start off the season with a losing record. Especially not with this team with strength on both sides of the ball.

The marquee matchup was Josh Allen and the Bills offense against Aaron Donald and the revamped Rams defense. It’s safe to say that Josh Allen won the battle in SoFi Stadium, as he finished with 210 passing yards and one passing touchdown. In the rushing aspect, he racked up 121 yards and one touchdown on the ground.

On the Rams side, the stars showed out as well, veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford had 383 passing yards and 3 passing touchdowns on 40 completions. While his receivers Puka Nakua and Davantae Adams also had great performances. Nakua had 138 yards receiving and touchdown, and Adams contributed with 51 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

There was back and forth action throughout the entirety of the game. The first half was relatively low-scoring, but both offenses really came to play in the second half. There were 35 total points in the fourth quarter, a new record for Monday Night Football.

Late in the fourth quarter, running backs from each side traded touchdowns to knot the score up at 34-34. James Cook punched one in for the Bills with 1:39 remaining and Kyren Williams for the Rams responded with a one yard touchdown run in the closing seconds of regulation. This sent the primetime game to overtime.

The overtime period was an exciting one. Buffalo received the ball first to begin the extra period, having an efficient and successful drive before disaster struck. James Cook took a first down handoff and had the ball punched out by Rams linebacker Nate Landman, to lead to a recovery by Aaron Donald for LA.

This was a huge momentum swing in the Rams favor, now only needing a field goal to win it in OT. They marched it down the field and got set up for a 48-yard game-winning field goal attempt. Kicker Harrison Mevis had his kick blocked by Bills linebacker Greg Rousseau to keep the game alive for Buffalo.

The Bills, now only needing a field goal, were already set up with good field position. A few positive plays set them up for their game winning field goal attempt from 45 yards. Buffalo kicker Tyler Bass drilled it and ended a very exciting, action-packed overtime thriller on Monday Night Football.

This win took the Buffalo Bills to 4-1 on the season while on the other side, the Los Angeles Rams fell to 2-3. Buffalo was able to outlast the high powered Rams and go home with a thrilling victory. This was significant for Josh Allen as well, as it was his first overtime win in his 9-year career. He was previously 0-7 in overtime games.

Both teams have big hopes come playoff time, with lots of veteran experience combined with young talent. Fans wouldn’t be surprised to see these two face off against each other again in February in a Super Bowl battle.

Now coming to a close in Week 8, the Buffalo Bills find themselves sitting atop the AFC East with a 6-1 record. They look to face the Vikings next week in Minnesota on Monday Night Football.

The Los Angeles Rams just picked up a win vs. the Chargers to get them to a 4-4 record. In Week 9, they face the Commanders on Sunday at 1 p.m at Northwest Stadium.
