Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians is on Disney+.
Coming one year after the first season, Percy Jackson is back. Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase and Grover Underwood return to Camp Half-Blood for yet another summer filled with chariot racing, dangerous adventures, and near-death experiences. In addition to this cast, a new face emerges into the fray. Percy's half-brother, Tyson, makes his appearance into this show.
If any of these characters sound familiar, it’s probably because they are the same characters from the book series of the same name. That’s correct, if you haven't figured it out already, the television series takes the events that occurred in a book and turns it into a real interpretation.
The names of each episode are directly taken from the chapters of books of which they are based. Even though Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief and Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters were made into movies before the show 15 years ago, fans thought they were unfaithful versions of the books that they know and love.
Rick Riordan, the author of the series, was not involved with the creation of the movies, but was involved with the creation of the show. Acting as a crucial figure, this ensures that his vision can be brought to life in the most accurate way possible.
This season tracks the journey to find the Golden Fleece, a very powerful artifact set to have immense healing powers. As set up in the first season, Kronos has come back into the picture, wanting to take revenge on those who have imprisoned him in Tartarus.
For context , Kronos is the father of Greek gods like Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. Kronos ate his children because he feared a prophecy stating that he would be overthrown by one of them would come true. Through war, the titans were overthrown by the Olympians, and Zeus banished him where he could not get out from. He has influenced some half-bloods, namely Luke, to help in his healing and get him out from his prison. Essentially, the Golden Fleece could either assist in healing Kronos and bringing on another war or healing the severely damaged Thalia’s Tree to restore Camp Half-Bloods barrier.
In addition to half-bloods and Greek gods, this series doesn’t stray from the mythological element: Sirens, The Fates, Cyclops’, Centaurs. Pretty much everything that makes Greek mythology fascinating is portrayed one way or another in both seasons.
Also similar mythological elements, human emotions also end up influencing the narrative. Friendship and selfishness act as dueling and conflicting forces throughout this new season. One major element that plays a huge role in all of Greek myths is the idea of prophecy. Evident in this season, prophecies may not always be clear or direct. As history has shown us, prophecies always have a funny way of becoming true whether we want them to or not.
This season is nothing short of an absolute masterpiece. It gives justice to the original books while also providing its own creative twists to it. After watching both seasons, I was left with a sense of nostalgia from reading these books when I was younger.
With the threat of war inevitable, what will our heroes do next? Go and watch seasons one and two of Percy Jackson and the Olympians now on Disney+.
