Yet another season of guest celebrities, whodunits, and classic Arconia charm, Only Murders in the Building has reached 5 seasons. Despite being another mystery-related show, Only Murders in the Building has managed to separate itself from the competition.
Following the true Only Murders in the Building standard, season 5 revolved solely around the victim, the one and only doorman, Lester. Only a side character until this season, Lester's entire life goes under the microscope. So, what didn’t we know about our favorite doorman?
Before we get to that, we have to cover this season's celebrity list. Reprising roles as our favorite investigators and podcasters are Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez, playing Oliver Putnam, Charles-Haden Savage, and Mabel Mora, respectively. Also coming back this season are Oliver's wife, Loretta Durkin, played by Meryl Streep, Michael Cyril Creighton playing Howard Morris, Da'Vine Joy Randolph as Detective Williams, and Jackie Hoffman as Uma Heller.
Like every other season, we welcome new cast members to the building. This latest season focuses on another group of three people: Camila White, played by Renée Zellweger, Bash Steed, played by Christoph Waltz, and Jay Pflug, played by Logan Lerman.
Together, they form a group of billionaires with their own visions to grow their wealth. In addition to them, Keegan-Michael Key plays Mayor Tillman, Bobby Cannavale plays Nicky Caccimelio, Beanie Feldstein plays Althea, and Téa Leoni plays Sofia Caccimelio.
This season focuses on a new room found beneath the Arconia: a casino. In this season, we find out that the previous doorman who trained Lester was involved with the running of this casino. This job, and a source of extra income, was passed on to Lester. The job was simple: stay late in the day, let people into the Arconia, and let them into the underground casino, get a cut of the profits. Partnered with Nicky Caccimelio, the Arconia would host casino nights.
This season highlights themes of humanity in an increasingly digital world. During the course of this season and in the wake of Lester's death, a human doorman, as well as a robot one, becomes his replacement. This rift puts the building at odds.
Workers see this new piece of technology as a threat to their jobs and their way of life as they know it. Residents see this as a blessing, being able to deliver packages and handle doorman duties better than a human. For places like the Arconia that still have that old New York charm, it shows how the times are changing, often faster than we could have ever imagined.
The season concludes in usual fashion with yet another dead body in the confines of the Arconia. Tina Fey's character, Cinda Canning, stumbles toward the Arconia, with blood on her hands, then dies right as she reaches the gate. Stay tuned for season 6 to see who committed this one.
