Smokelines Set to Release First Single Off Upcoming EP

LIU students are set to release their pop-dance single called “Heartbreak Looks Better” on Friday, November 13.
The songwriting group Smokelines, is made up of two LIU students, Faith Gara and Skylar Star. Both are part of LIU’s Music Technology, Entrepreneurship and Production program. “Heartbreak Looks Better” is the first single on their debut EP, which is expected to drop next semester in the late spring or early summer.
Gara, who is a New York Native, met Southern California native, Star, while attending LIU and started connecting over their mutual love of music and song writing. “We became close friends and turned conversations into songs. We began writing so much together that we decided why not release the songs we write together under a collaborative name? We like to say that we write pretty fiery lyrics, hence the name Smokelines,” Star said in an interview with Jay Allen Sanford from the San Diego Reader.
Their new song is meant to bring to light how girls process their emotions while going through a breakup, “We’ve both seen a lot of girls post glowing selfies and stunning pictures right after a breakup, but we know that they’re still hurting,” Gara shared. “It’s a social norm to hide our feelings with a beautiful disguise on the outside, meanwhile dealing with a whirlwind of emotions on the inside. We want to acknowledge the ‘Heartbreak Looks Better’ phenomenon and encourage people that it’s okay to reveal vulnerability.”
With their love of writing and playing music, they released their first song together, “Ms. Claus” back in December of 2019 with the help of LIU professor Tony Dofat. “Heartbreak Looks Better” will be their second single as a group. However, both girls have solo careers as well. Gara released her first single “8 Shots” back in 2018 before coming to LIU and Star is set to release some solo tracks within the coming year.
